Who can be a Hellion?
The Hellions of Troy Roller Derby League is made up of skaters, referees, non-skating officials, and volunteers. All members must be over the age of 18.
Just like WFTDA, the Hellions are committed to inclusive and anti-discrimination practices in relation to all transgender women, intersex women, and gender expansive participants. To read more about who can be a Hellions skater, check out WFTDA's gender statement. We also welcome humans of any and all genders as officials, referees, coaches, and volunteers.
Some of the things we look for in potential skaters include:
A positive attitude
Excellent sportsmanship
Ability to listen and apply new knowledge
Time commitment
Do I need to know how to skate?
No! Your first three months will be dedicated to developing and improving your skating skills, as well as learning all about the sport of roller derby.
Skaters come to the league from all different backgrounds – some were figure skaters, some were hockey players, some haven’t skated since childhood. If you bring the right attitude, determination, and willingness to practice, we will teach you the rest!
What kind of equipment is needed?
Every skater is required to wear a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, kneepads, mouth guard, and quad roller skates. Everything but the skates can be found at sports equipment stores, such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Sports Authority, or Seasons on Lark St (Albany). Before purchasing any gear, it is recommended that you determine how much you can spend (i.e. what is your budget?), and then discuss your options with experienced skaters. They can help you choose between different brands and styles, and tell you the best places to get skates and other equipment. There are also numerous online stores you can check out including Wicked Skatewear and Bruised Boutique. We also have a deal set up with Rollarama Skating Center for a discount on skate packages, gear, and accessories.
